Good oral health is one of the most worthwhile investments you can make!  Prevention is key in keeping good oral health.

Did you know that in recent studies, Gum disease has been linked to other health problems such as having a higher incidence of Heart Disease, Stroke, Uncontrolled Diabetes, and Low-Weight / Pre-Term Labor

Factors that increase your chances of having Gum disease are:
1) Not getting your teeth cleaned regularly
2)
Not flossing regularly
3) If any of your blood-relatives have had gum disease (it runs in families)
4)
Smoking
5)
Having Diabetes

Believe it or not, there is more to good oral hygiene than brushing and flossing your teeth.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends you brush your teeth twice daily with an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste and floss your teeth to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under your gum line.  What many of us don’t realize is that good oral health practices are as important as what we put in our mouth.

The ADA recognizes the link between good oral health and good nutrition.  With so many of us, and our children, consuming record numbers of sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks, and non-nutritious snack foods, tooth decay is on the rise.  When plaque comes into contact with sugar or starch in the mouth, acid is produced, which attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more. This can eventually result in tooth decay.

The Key to a Healthy Mouth:

By maintaining a healthy diet, drinking more waterlimiting between-meal snacks, and especially avoiding sipping on non-water drinks over extended periods of time, we improve the overall health of our teeth and gums.  If you have any questions about how your diet may be affecting your teeth and gums, please talk with our staff, we are happy to answer your questions.

Is it time for your dental check-up and cleaning?
Our licensed dental hygienists follow the American Dental Association’s recommendation that patients receive a cleaning and check-up every six months.  For people with gum disease, a history of gum disease, or just have more difficulty maintaining healthly teeth and gums a more frequent cleaning schedule is a must.

Be sure to let us know if you have been experiencing any oral discomfort so that during your exam, she can pay particular attention to that area.
